TIF has designs on safer public transport
Travelling on Greater Manchester’s buses, trains and trams would be even safer if the Transport Innovation Fund proposals are approved.
New and improved CCTV systems, emergency help points and better lighting would be provided at all of Greater Manchester’s new interchanges and bus stations, and more cameras would be provided in bus shelters and on buses.
All bus station, Metrolink stop and new interchange CCTV systems would be linked to a 24-hour monitoring and control centre.
New interchanges, Metrolink stops and station improvements would be designed in consultation with Greater Manchester Police’s architectural liaison team.
This would ensure that a consistent level of security is provided at public transport facilities across Greater Manchester.
And the TIF investment would build on the work already being done by the Crime Reduction on Public Transport (CROPT) partnership to improve safety on all modes of public transport in Greater Manchester.
There would also be further enforcement activity on the ground to tackle antisocial behaviour.
Lord Peter Smith, Leader of AGMA, said: “We need to make public transport as attractive as possible if we are going to encourage more people to leave the car at home.
“And while, statistically, public transport is a safe way to travel, people want to see more being done to help them feel safer when they are travelling on Greater Manchester’s buses, trains and trams.
“I believe the TIF proposals would go a long way to achieving that by providing a consistent standard of security measures across the network."
